Do You Know and Use the Key to Happiness?

By Mary Jaksch

The one thing all humans have in common is that each of us wants to be happy.

Brother David Steindl-Rast, a monk and interfaith scholar suggests the key to happiness is gratitude. Watch the inspiring video below about slowing down, looking where you’re going, and above all, being grateful.

Here’s a quick heads-up: at the end of the week, you’ll see a fascinating article on Goodlife Zen, written by my friend, Laura Leigh Clarke. She’s a bright spark and her brilliant article is about how to eliminate the to-do pressure.

What do you think of the video by David Steindl-Rast? Please share in the comments.

  1. Hi Mary,

Gratitude is a conduit to good. Since where our attention and energy goes, grows, if we are grateful we cultivate positive energy for all the blessings we see.

This positive energy builds up in us and creative immense happiness and other positive emotions.

Great message, love it! See the good, be the good.

    Great video, thanks for sharing.

I certainly agree that gratitude is a key to happiness, but we all have so much “noise” going on from internal dialog (self-esteem, regret, fear, etc.) that finding gratitude is difficult. Especially in Brother David’s point about the importance of the present moment.

One of the keys I’ve found is raising my “idling speed.” That is, our brains are wired to attach more significance to moments of either high or low emotional drama.

But yet life happens mostly in these moments of what some refer to as boring. That’s where most of our present moments happen – in times of seemingly indifference or when we think not much is going on.

These are the moments we need to find gratitude in. Training ourselves to raise our idling speed from one of indifference in these moments to ones of gratitude, and thus general contentment and happiness.

Thankfully this can be learned. Though it does take some work, at least in my experience.

One concept of gratitude that’s always stuck with me is; gratitude is an action. In that we take care of things we’re grateful for; and first and foremost that includes ourselves.

  5. Dr Gulam Mohd Chinchwalker (Qadri) says:

Happiness is serenity peace within . happiness is within heart and within mind . Even though we have every thing at our home we need to do shopping so even though we have happiness within us we need to do shopping outside our body our wordly home . We need to purchase to make happiness money, love , success , health , self respect , we have to pay for happiness in terms of hard work , sacrifice and gratitude .

Happiness comes to stay when we are free of guilt , when we feel we have done something good . when we have spread peace and happiness around than tension and worries flies away . The vulture disturbing our mind with ambition, hate , pride ego when it flies away than there is room for peace and happiness . There is also a psedo happiness we make our self hynotise by saying we are happy when we gain something thus we belied by gaining all the time we have happiness.

Happiness is soul and soul can never be at peace and happy without being caring and loving soul

Hi Mary, thanks for sharing this very inspirational video. Happiness is already within all of use and we don’t really need to do a lot in order to feel happy. It is flowing quite naturally, unless we block the flow by focusing only on the things we don’t like in our life, by not seeing all the great things in our life, by looking for happiness only on the outside (mostly in material things)…
