How to Have More Fun in Your Life

By Mary Jaksch

Are you about to set some heavy goals? Maybe you want to be more successful, lose weight, find the right partner, do more exercise …
I can see you cringing at the list. How about a very simple goal (if you can call it that) for your life…

Have more fun
If you’re considering how to change your life, having fun is an essential ingredient. Remember that ‘fun’ is not a static state of being. To have fun, we need to move, be creative, and enjoy the company of others. We need to sing, dance, run, play – or whatever else tickles our fancy.

Watch this joyful video below, Hoy BailarĂ© (Today I’m going to dance) by Argentine musician Leon Gieco. The video is all about how to have fun – whatever your circumstance.

Hi Mary!

What a delightful Youtube clip!

My favorite thing to do for fun is to wrestle around with my 5-year-old boy and have tickle fights and just act silly. Recently, we’ve been having fun with sword fights using the center of rolls of wrapping paper.

Hope your New Year is full of love and life and excitement.

Ha, ha – that sounds great! I was really sad when two of my great friends turned from kids into young adults overnight last year – and they stopped playing with me :-(

We should all play like kids! Even as adults

Beautiful, Mary! On Christmas day, I danced to a rock and roll Christmas tune with my 75 yr old mother. We had a blast! The grandchildren looked on with surprise and disbelief. I hadn’t danced for several years due to a debilitating disease situation, in fact, my mother is in better physical condition than I am, but it was great fun. It was so much fun that despite physical limitations, I plan to figure out a way to dance with others on a regular basis.

Thanks for sharing the video. Hope you had a wonderful holiday. Happy New Year to you and all the very best in 2012.

Awesome. Having fun has been on my mind.
I’m lucky. I get to go play more than a lot of people do… but just yesterday when we pulled up to a new beach where there were bigger waves than I’m used to I started getting nervous.
Why?
It wasn’t what I had been doing. Yet there was a time in my life I would have thought immediately that the challenge would be fun.
I decided to let down my hair so to speak as the video shows. Go back to the confident self and do everything wide open.
It’s the hesitancy that becomes a problem.
Mahalo for the simple post the meant a lot.

I want to start kite surfing. I love that kind of rather rough fun :-)

Very timely; just when I am about to have a meeting with the bosses and having fun at work is what I want to mention.
This morning I went to the top of a small hill to help the sunrise and was assisted by parrots making funny noises while they hung upside down. That was fun!

Hey Peter – lovely to see you pop up here :-)
Fun at work is important. I love my work, but I also want to play more outside of work.

What’s the point of life if we’re not having fun? Goals should ultimately focus on our happiness, not making others happy or doing what we think we should do or what others expect of us.

Getting up and dancing, moving our bodies, letting go is so freeing! Unfortunately it’s something many of us do so infrequently. I know I could use a little more groove in my day. It makes everything else much more fun (even if my kids look at me a little funny). Thanks for the reminder, Mary!

I had to think about this for a bit…which tells me I’m not having nearly enough fun!

I would love to have more fun playing with my doggie friends. I’m heading back to work in a couple of days, and I want to have lots of fun there while most of the office is still on holiday!

Doggie friends are great playmates, Jane. Kids are too. But unfortunately they grow up and don’t play so much…

Hi Mary,
That video was so uplifting! I love dance videos, movies etc! I don’t dance enough these days! Something to think about!
You’re right when you say: “having fun is an essential ingredient” At this time of year when we are setting goals we tend to be so serious about it all! Thanks for the reminder to include the fun!
Happy 2012 to you!

Might seem simplistic, but this is probably one of the most important elements to a healthy, joyous life. When creating our daily priorities or even planning for the year ahead, “What would be fun?” should be a top question. Great post, Mary!

One not so small thing is that I miss going to the movies now that they are delivered to our home. I’d like to go out more. Retirement can be so isolating! Of course I would love to dance again but where and how is the question. I miss Jazzercise classes. I should try Zumba but I think it would be too much physically. Hmm, maybe I should try it anyway.

By the way, I have been taking a break from the computer the last half of last year. I love the look (and content) of your blog!

So at home I can easly concentrate on things which are important for me and make me smiling!

Ways I’d like to have more fun is find the child in me again and invite them over to play with my 12yr old before she is too teenie. 3 legged race at Hopai sports day and boogie boarding have been a start this summer.

Hi Felicity! Great to see you here. The 12yr old you’re talking about is friend of mine :-)

It’s taken me a while to work out what I want to do this year to have more fun in life.
I’ve finally found it!
I’ve started learning the Ukulele :-D

Please give my love to that lovable 12yr old of yours

I would like to have more fun (and to experience more joy) in any way I could possibly figure out. I am recently widowed, after my husband’s year and half long illness. He has been gone now for two months tomorrow. (seems MUCH longer). You need not feel sorry for me, I have that covered, feeling sorry every day. Fun does not seem appropriate yet or called for or even at all possible.
Some day I will have some fun again! And I am old enough to know ‘some day’ will come again. Today is not that day.
