How the Art of Traveling Light Can Help You to Lighten Up Your Soul

A guest post by Alessandro Haas

I heard the music in the middle of last year when I was sweating over my bachelor’s thesis and it started to get louder and louder but I could not quite identify the song.

I was too busy and had my playlist on endless loop to carry me through the writing process.

But on the final day when I was sending in my thesis it became clear to me. It was the song of the open road. I was a free man again. And the world was waiting to be discovered.

Though this time I wanted to do it differently. I’ve traveled before and it’s not something I am uncomfortable with but I made a mistake last time. A heavy mistake. It weighed exactly 18.9kg and was just at the limit for my flight to Canada.

As I was preparing for my next life-changing challenge in New Zealand I was clear that I didn’t want to have too much baggage with me. The weight of the task ahead alone was heavy enough. It meant relocating alone to a faraway country with no plan and almost no contacts to fall back on. There was only the will to accept this challenge and to get into an adventure.

I set one simple rule for myself: Only one carry-on sized bag is allowed and everything has to fit in there.

So I made my packing list, bought a small netbook and left everything that isn’t necessary for essential comfort at home. Heading to the airport I was afraid that I may miss something but 3 months later I now know that I actually did miss several things. Fortunately, New Zealand is a civilized country and people here seem to have the same needs as everybody else – so I could get what I needed.

Feeling free and learning to be content with your own company

If you leave most of your possessions behind and live out of a carry-on bag for months, interesting things happen. The first thing that I enjoyed was the flexibility and the freedom that it brings. In 15 minutes flat I could pack all my belongings and be on the move again to wherever I wanted. I was never stuck anywhere because it might be too inconvenient to change venues.

The second amazing thing was that I realized that I can be happy with a lot less stuff as long as I have good company. And for some stretches on the lonely South Island good company meant just me and myself. It was a great opportunity to discover myself without any distractions. Nonetheless, I am happy to have found a great circle of friends in the Tango community of Wellington.

And if I really forgot something, I could easily get it here or use my imagination and my talent for improvisation.

Become your own travel light guru

It’s been an amazing way of traveling so far and I have put together some resources to help you become a travel light guru:

Doug Dymont’s website www.onebag.com is a great starting point to dive deeper into the finer details of traveling light. It offers exhaustive information from choosing the right backpack to the science of wrinkles and how to avoid them.

Another great resource that explores the philosophy and the mindset of traveling lightly and at your own pace through this world is Rolf Pott’s inspiring book “Vagabonding – An Uncommon Guide to the Art of Long-Term World Travel”. For Rolf vagabonding is not only the art of long term world travel but more an outlook on life in general that encourages simplicity, open-mindedness, creativity and self-reliance.

Traveling light as an outlook on life

I hope you found some inspiration and are going to give it a try. It will help you prioritize when you’ve lost sight what’s important in life.

It helped me to truly understand that life is about relationships and the connections we make along the way. It’s not about the material stuff we carry around or the possessions that drag us down and bind us to one place.

Travel lightly through the world and take your own time about it!

Great piece! I accidently had the experience of traveling real light – our luggage was lost for our hiking trip to Italy. We survived fine, especially since we had worn our hiking shoes on the plane and taken our cameras with us in our carry-on.
It is truly amazing to realize how few ‘things’ we really need. Our health and positive mind-set were all that was needed. And we had a great time, and learned lots of good lessons. (See http://rebuildyourlifecoach.wordpress.com/2011/07/18/how-to-have-a-good-vacation-%e2%80%93-luggage-free/ )
Thanks for a very unique and interesting posting.

In my first years of college, the urge to travel was building inside me. I eventually decided to take a leave of absence to experience more of the world and (frankly) to put the compulsion to rest.

After many attempts to get on my way, I had to admit defeat. I realized I wasn’t strong enough yet to venture into the world so alone and with so little. Alessandro, your words have given me hope that I will one day revist my traveling plans and expand my life. Thank you!

Hello Kyle,

good to hear that you could get some hope out of it. The book Vagabonding might be exactly what you need to muster the courage to venture into the world. The most difficult thing is making the leap. But when you’re going you realize that 99% of the people are actually really nice and you’ll get lots of help from all around you if you keep a good attitude and open-mindedness.

All the best

A few years ago I traveled throughout Europe with just a carry on bag. The advantages on just getting around and not having to carry large suitcases made the trip easier. I really didn’t feel like I was missing anything. On car trips, it’s more tempting to load up with more, but I think back to that trip and know I can travel light. Thanks for the links to more resources.

It really takes so much guts to be willing to “discover myself without any distractions.” I bow to you! I like the way you framed the whole idea of traveling light. On a physical level it might be about simplifying our possessions, but on a deeper level it is about simplifying our mind.

Hey Alessandro – happy birthday! Thanks for a very interesting post.

I once traveled in Morocco with my son Sebastian for 10 days – and only had a carry-on backpack. It worked a treat! It might have been more challenging in a cold climate…

Thanks Mary,

I agree traveling light can be a bit challenging depending on where you go and also the airline restrictions make it almost impossible to have your carry-on bag with you. But in the end it’s more about the mindset and carrying only what’s really necessary.

I have learned to travel light because life is a journey. In my youth I wanted to have so many material things but now I prefer to have practical and useful things with me.

I often see tourists carrying many luggage and some with heavy, bulky backpacks. That looks so troublesome and tiring. Hence I resonates a lot with your idea of traveling light, Alessandro. And you illustrates “life is about relationships and the connections we make along the way”, just love it!

wow travel light… thanks for this post, baggage can also be emotional and spiritual… and these are the kind of stuff that even strong people are having a very hard time to carry.

Hi Alessandro! This post caught my attention because I will be traveling to 2 different places over the course of 2 weeks at the end of September. You are right, a heavy bag is a very heavy physical and emotional weight to bear! I think with some well thought out planning and an open mind I can travel lighter than ever before.
Thanks for the insight! Gives me courage to ‘just say no’ to an overstuffed bag (and life!)
