A guest post by Jean Gogolin of The Writer’s Clinic
Show a man a picture of a pretty woman, says a Rebecca Coffey piece in the June 11 issue of Scientific American and he’s likely to bet more at the craps table, run a red light, or get the urge to wage war.
Why?
For the same reason bull elephants charge and lions roar: To say, “Hey — Look what a fearless stud I am!”
The insight, if that’s what it is, comes from a study by Lei Chang, a psychologist at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, along with colleagues at China’s Hebei University.
Chang and his fellow psychologists wondered whether clubs and guns are the human equivalent of antlers and horns, helping warriors to beat out more peaceable types in the competition for mates.
And if they are, is that why conquering armies so often rape and pillage? Is that why even groups of chimps go on sex raids?
Is it possible that the reason men wage war is not so much to spread religion or win territory as it is to spread their genes by impregnating females, willing or not?
To test their theory, Chang’s researchers showed men pictures of women, looking for evidence that the pictures affected their attitudes about war.
It turned out that men did indeed respond to photographs of attractive faces by endorsing statements about war.
Photographs of unattractive women’s faces, on the other hand, didn’t have the same effect at all. And — surprise! — women didn’t lust for war after seeing either attractive or unattractive men.
One Scientific American reader noted that this phenomenon has been observed throughout history “by such diverse elements as Herodotus (the ancient Greek often called the world’s first historian) and CNN,” calling it “simply the human condition.”
But my friend Michael thinks his favorite Robin Williams quote probably says it best:
“God gave men both a penis and a brain, but not enough blood supply to run both at the same time.”
What are your thoughts about this?

If this is an evolved behavior, then it would be logical that women find men who go to war more attractive than men who don’t. Did the article say anything about that?
The original article in Scientific American didn’t say that, but another conclusion could be that men *think* that’s true. Always realizing, of course, that these are generalizations.

I think it’s time to evolve to a higher level of thinking for both men and women, don’t you think. And I think it’s fairly well known that rape and pillage has more to do with violence and frustration than looking at pretty women. Check with the experts on this and just look at what is going on in the world. Those are my thoughts on this.

There’s a huge significance to the “lady in red” which supports the theory in this article.
Next time you’re watching a movie, take note and watch if a woman in red appears in the film, I guarantee there will be in one way or another either in the background or as a main character.
Very interesting, this could also be why many men (not all) think they must dominate women in one way or another.

Male dominance seems to be a very old behavior.

i agree with that

This is odd … odd, sad and stupid (and I rarely use the word stupid) I hope the research is flawed … because it bothers me to think that men are so easily persuaded to make major decisions based on thinking with the wrong head.

This is obviously true. The only reason men do anything is because we think it will give us a better shot at women.
Work hard. Get money. Impress hot women. Trophy wife.
The same conclusion can be drawn with war. Taking someone else’s land means I’m better than that guy who had the land and therefore am admired by more women.
Anyone who disagrees is a fool.
Thanks for weighing in on this, LB Eric

Wow – how easy it seems to be to lump all men into a single group, all exhibiting identical behaviour.
That used to be called prejudice. Now they call it a blog … sad
Actually, it was a study by a few psychologists reported in Scientific American magazine, and the operative words were that men are “likely,” to exhibit a particular behavior, not that all of them will.

I am not sure about relation between war and looking at beautiful women, but it is well known that both men and women change their behavior when they come face to face with opposite sex person whom they are attracted to.

Interesting study. But I’m not convinced. That there was a relationship between sexual attraction and war doesn’t mean one caused the other. Causal relationships are much more difficult to demonstrate.
Another kink in the study is the separation between who actually goes to war and who sends them to war. Politicians and autocrats are usually the ones responsible for war but rarely do the fighting.
And then just a cursory scan of U.S. wars makes further makes it difficult to sustain the premise.
One war declared independence. One war ended slavery and restored the union. Another stopped Hitler dead in his expansive and horrific tracks. Some pretty noble reasons for war that loom much more obviously significant than the desire to score the next sexual victory.

Starting with Robin Williams’ quote, I think he’s often funny but it’s precisely this sort of joke that prompts both men and women to behave stupidly. Men by half-believing it’s true and so acting out this behaviour, and women also half-believing it’s true and so dismissing men as not to be taken seriously. (Personally I hate the jokes women share about how useless men are just as much as the reverse.)
And concerning the bulk of the article, you know I’m not actually very interested in whether the theories are true. The point is that we have free will and, as Marianne says, we need to evolve to a higher level, men and women alike. We make choices.

Mmmm interesting. Our survial as a species is directly attributable to our nature so such reactions cannot be considered bad/wrong. It is only perceived contemporary civilisation that brings such nature into question
I suspect that the advisors to the hawks of goverment have known about this physiological reaction for a long time which is why we have artifacts like Lady Gaga and Britney Spears wearing fewer and fewer clothes as more wars are declared
Interesting theory, Chewbyka!

I feel that this might have been true centuries ago, as a subconscious instinct. But I do hope that we have evolved since then.

If we remain conscious of ourselves including our thoughts and state of being, than a pretty woman should not instigate the need for war or any type of acts that were suggested in the article.
I agree that it is a generalization, but it does happen. Male and female bodies come pre-programmed through genetics to behave a certain way when outside stimulus is presented to us. Like I said, if we are consciously aware then it should not affect our behavior.

It’s so strange to see that people have problems with the “human condition” and would rather pretend that it “just ain’t so”.
But I am always happy to see scientific developments and insights into what it means to be human. After all, the truth is the truth – whether one accepts it or not.
And on top of that, I’m a girl.

How do we explain all the women raped in the Democratic Republic of Congo? They’re not wearing sexy red Victoria’s Secret. Yet they get raped over and over. I shall be interviewing well-known photographer Alissa Everett who has a non-profit to help these rape victim and who tells inspirational stories of how some women overcome their traumatic lives through starting businesses to help other rape victims.

The psychologists’ study this post was about was not that a woman’s “prettiness” was the only reason for rape; it was that when men see pretty women, some are likely to think “war.” The hideous raping of women in the Congo is a crime against humanity.

Huh?Those who crave war are heartless, greedy, selfish people.A picture of a pretty woman has got nothing to do with it.Sure a pretty woman can cause a man to be more competitive, driven and even jealous…but to cause war?pfft!don’t think so.

Dear Jean, this is a very interesting perspective on the (male) animal instinct. It almost sounds as if men are by nature programmed to strive to penetrate women and the territory of others.
Whew. That’s a scary thought.

This is made me laugh, when i started to read this post i remember my friends and her wife it end up with fighting well we know that men God give them eyes see what the beauty is and as also a women we appreciate things too.so i suggest we better be open minded because it’s just a fantasy of the guy to look sexy girls.

Whenever I see or hear of a scientific study on emotional behavior, I often shrug in disbelief. Emotions are not premeditated and cannot be scientifically measured.
Emotions happen in real time; studies of emotions are after the fact and therefore useless except for provoking more emotions after reading them.
“The emotions aren’t always immediately subject to reason, but they are always immediately subject to action.” ~ William James
“Until a man has expressed his emotion, he does not yet know what emotion it is…” ~ R.G. Collingwood

It’s difficult to make a simple statement about this because the reasons for war have changed over thousands of years as previous history has such a large effect. There is not doubt though in my mind that the urge to fight in men is pretty much the same as the urge in the males in a pride of lions, i.e. the urge to see their genes passed on to the next generation.

As a chiropractor who bases most of what he does off of evolutionary biology, this rings true.
The purpose of life from an evolutionary perspective is to reproduce.
In nature, the genetically stronger wins the female, because the offspring with stronger genes tends to survive.
Violence is a “strong” trait, hence why we think war.
Creative piece Jean, great job!
Very interesting theory. Men are certainly ruled by what’s between their legs at least half the time.
