What lies behind us and what lies before us are tiny matters compared to what lies within us.
Oliver Wendell Holmes
Why are you looking for simplicity in life? Are you doing it to have more time during your day? Are you doing it to have more room in your house? Perhaps the reason why most of us are looking for simplicity is because they need some inner peace and contentment. All of your external organizational efforts will be useless if you cannot simplify your inner world: your mind, your emotions, your thoughts.
Just think of it, a well-organized and minimalistic home won’t bring you any satisfaction if you are troubled with negative or unhappy thoughts. A perfect schedule which has enough room for all your activities will be useless if you are reliving over and over old painful memories. External ways of simplifying life have no meaning at all if you cannot find your balance and inner simplicity.
Actually we will never be able to grasp the concept of “living with less” if we neglect our inner selves. Without inner simplicity we will be left wanting more to fill up our inner emptiness.
In fact, the more you simplify your life externally the more time you will have to deal with “your inner demons.” Memories of the past … restless thoughts … strong emotions … doubts … This thought process can become suffocating over time if you do not find your inner strength and peace.
1. Become aware
Before you can find your inner simplicity you need to get to know yourself. There are so many things that we do on autopilot that often we have no logical reason to do them. Like buying a new gadget that you saw at the store or taking on another social commitment. Start questioning yourself “Why am I doing it? Why do I want it?’ Soon you will notice that many desires that you have are not tempting anymore.
Awareness comes with practice and the best way of practicing it is through meditation. Choose your style of meditation and practice it on a daily basis. Soon you will notice that moments of awareness will come to you more frequently throughout your day.
2. Allow yourself to be bored
Today we have completely mastered the art of conquering boredom. We jam-pack our schedule, call our friends, turn on the TV, surf the web or hang out on the social media websites, weed the yard, and the list goes on. By cramming so much stuff in our schedule we limit our personal time, the time that we can spend getting to know ourselves, becoming aware and dealing with our deep issues. It is okay to have 15-30 minutes during the day when you have absolutely nothing to do. Let yourself be still, connect with nature around you, pray … find your inner peace.
3. Forgive
A lot of times we re-live certain painful moments of our lives simply because we cannot forgive. The feelings of anger, deep sorrow, self-pity, despair, and helplessness start eating us from the inside out. No matter how painful your memory is – it is already in the past and you cannot change it. Think about it and forgive. Forgive another person and forgive yourself. It will be an act of the most sincere inner generosity and kindness that will finally set you free.
4. Resign as general manager of the universe
We are not responsible for everyone in this world. In fact, a lot of times we even have no control over our own lives. I believe that there is something much greater ruling this world, something that cannot be described in words and cannot be fully understood by us, regular people. I believe in something much greater than me and it helps me to get over many things in my life. What do you believe in?
5. Practice positive realism
Positive realism is the approach that I employ in life. There is a certain order of things: birth, death and everything in between. With positive realism you can see exactly how things work in life and find the reason why they do. Be positive about the outcomes but do not forget to prepare if something goes wrong.
6. Write it down
Sometimes the best place for all your thoughts is on a piece of paper. Why do you have to clutter your mind with all the ideas, memories, thoughts that are constantly tripping one over another? Writing them down will help you clear some room in your head and find the best solutions for the problems you are facing. Journaling is like organizing your home: instead of having your things lying all over the place you find a perfect place for each of them, you also find things that you do not need and can easily throw away (like silly worries and doubts that get you nowhere.)
7. Organize your routines
There are certain routines that we do during the day no matter how we feel and what we plan. We take showers, eat, brush our teeth, get ready for work, get homework done or help our kids with that homework etc. These routines can be huge stressors if they are not organized.
Spend some time reassessing your routines. What do you do every day? How can this routine be simplified? Is there something that you can eliminate (like watching TV)?
Maybe you can get your breakfast ready the night before to have more time for prayer and meditation when you wake up. You can make it a habit to unwind for 15-30 minutes every day when you get home from work by playing with your kids or just enjoying the silence.
Remember that new habits take at least 28 days to form. Don’t push too hard and make one baby step at a time. After all, inner simplicity is not about rushing through life or doing something fast. It is about living right now and enjoying the life that you have.

Thank you Anastasiya for the reminder about inner simplicity. Last night, at a type of meditation group, the thought came to me that I wanted to simplify my life so I had time for the things that really matter to me, but now I know I need to clear that internal clutter first (which I could feel when I meditated this morning).
Hi Susan,
I am glad that you decided to declutter your inner world first. I firmly believe that everything around us in a physical world (things, our schedule, commitments) is just a reflection of our inner state. If we can find our inner simplicity simplifying the rest of our lives will be extremely easy.

You’re suggestion to allow yourself to be bored is a great one, although once you embrace doing nothing I think you eventually realize that boredom isn’t the result. Sitting, quieting your mind, simply being present and enjoying what’s around you is peaceful, but it’s not necessarily boring for me. On the contrary, I find it quite fascinating to just sit and observe. I think that’s why meditation in it’s many forms has benefited my life so much.

I completely agree with you Jason. I think that people who have not tried meditating and don’t know how to do it the action of stillness feels more like boredom at first. Of course over time this boredom (like you said) transitions into deep connection with your inner world.

Hi Anastasiya,
Very good post about being simple. I really like your point about being bored. Yes that is true. I understand that we don’t let ourselves idle. We always try to fit some task into our schedule and complicate our lives.
Excellent point.
Cheers,
Jane.

Beautiful article Anastasiya! I’ve shared it w/my Personal Renewal Group members because it ties in so well with Renee Trudeau’s Live Inside Out movement. Thank you always for your great inspiration!
Sara,
I love Renee Trudeau’s book! I read it whole or in parts probably at least 10 times – there is always something extremely helpful and useful waiting for me just when I need it. I am extremely happy that you were inspired to share my article with your Personal Renewal Group.

This is a really great article, and good food for thought for me. I find it much easier to be uncluttered inside than outside. (I wonder why that is? I’ll have to ponder that one.) For example, your #6 and #7… I write it all down (#6) and it’s not hanging around in my mind, but then I have lists and folders all over. Then I need to do #7 (organize my routines), and it seems to become an endless cycle.
I do agree and notice that when I am clear inside it’s easier to be at peace, and also more simple and clear on the outside. I also think it works the other way around too, at least for me. So if I want to feel calm, clear, and focused, it helps me to have an uncluttered environment. It’s all one big system, after all. But I agree that is not the whole answer.
I especially like your #1 right now, though. I’ve been doing that myself lately and it feels wonderful and even important to be making more conscious choices.
Thank you!

Patti,
I believe that our environment should always be in balance (both inside and out.) And sometimes we do need a break from all simplifying and organizing – a little bit of chaos can bring balance too (but in moderate amounts of course.)
If you have trouble with all the pieces of paper around your house you can always have one notebook from different thoughts. For example, I have one notebook in my night table to write down thoughts before I go to bed or when I wake up. I have one in the kitchen (while cooking or when I need to jot down a quick grocery list and some tasks.) And definitely one in the office and in my pocket book (this one travels with me all the time because this where I put all my creative ideas and projects.)

Hmmm, thanks for your thoughtful suggestion. I just may try that…

Love, love, love this article…I’m huge on finding inner peace, which is one of the reasons I’m so obsessed with hot tea – nothing more peaceful than drinking it while listening to the rain and not doing a darn thing. I’m also huge on writing things down…it helps so much! Nice read.

this was great! i have been trying to allow myself to be bored in the last few weeks and who knew how hard that would be?? i find myself reaching for my cell phone to check my email or facebook automatically, the minute i find myself with nothing to do or waiting in line, etc.
and i so needed the advice to resign as general manager of the universe! brilliant. i am so darned concerned with what everyone else is doing wrong (mostly on the roads or in public) that i lose sight of myself and the beautiful world that’s around me. it almost makes me laugh, i’ll try and keep it in mind in my commute home tonight!

Being bored is something I don’t ALLOW myself to feel in southern California, but which I DID FEEL when my family and I lived on an island off Belize. I had time to do a puzzle with my ten-year-old son, something I would never, (SADLY) consider doing here. Very sad, but very true to the lifestyle of someone trying to get her book published in a competitive world. As far as kids go, I have a ton to say about allowing kids to be bored rather than scheduling ten million activities for them while they are kids and still developing and need play-time and down-time.
A pleasure to read these words and get to know you a little better Anastiya. Thanks for some valuable thoughs.
If we find it boring to be still it may reveal to us we are hiding from something that is very important to us and our joy in life: our own true Self. I find it is only when I am still that I can really connect more deeply with the authentic “me.”

Nice article Ana. I resonates more to #3, to forgive. How can we feel free and relax when all the stress, unhappy experiences clutter in our mind? Sometimes we have to admit “it is what it is” and put down the burden to gain inner peace~
I’ve been on a de-cluttering phase for a good year now and have noticed that after doing a few great purges of all of the physical ‘stuff’, as you mentioned, I was that much more aware and able to focus on the inner-working of my personal development. Love this list!
I shared it yesterday with my readers on my weekly link-share post. Here’s a link to it: http://rosiedreams.com/lovely-links-1/
Thanks!

Over the past few months, I’ve been trying to make my life more simple, sort of my own ‘back to basics.’ What I’ve realized is you really need to start INSIDE in order to make meaningful changes on the OUTSIDE. I am so happy to read this post tonight, especially because I need to work on #5 – positive realism. I’m a believer that a lot that feels out of place in life can feel a little less of a burden with the right mind set. Thanks for the reminder! We are all so lucky to have such great resources such as this on the web.
Best,
Amanda
The hardest step is forgiveness. You have to truely believe you are worthy of it, and be dedicated to moving forwards and letting go of the past.
