By Mary Jaksch

What do you want from life? Many people struggle with this question. Maybe you do too? Life can get so busy that we don’t have time to really think about what we want out of life. And when we do find what we want, it can seem impossible to achieve it.

I’m planning new eBook. So I’m keen to address what you want to know and what would make a difference to your life. I recently emailed participants of Virtual Zen Retreats and asked, ‘What is the one thing you want from life?’ I got some fascinating answers and want to share them with you. Below you can find some of the responses.

Here’s what other people want from life. Which responses do you resonate with?

Spirituality

  1. to have some clarity of mind;
  2. to feel each day more nearer to my inner self, be centered;
  3. to know myself;
  4. to have a greater level of spiritual joy that raises me above our human burdens;
  5. to live with intention and purpose;
  6. to be in the ocean of love and wisdom;
  7. to get a meaningful glimpse of the spiritual good side of everyone I come in contact with;
  8. to learn how to meditate when you do not have a lot of time to do so;
  9. to know how to abandon the shallower world around us to reach greater levels of peace;
  10. to really feel alive. I know that feeling. It doesn’t matter if you feel sad or happy there is a richness to it that is sometimes missing and I feel a dullness;
  11. to feel connected and not separated and lost would change my life;
  12. to stop searching answers to unanswerable questions and just live;
  13. Meaningful Life

  14. at the end, to be able to say I made a positive change that had a major effect on a large community (leaving the world better off somehow)
  15. the one thing I want out of life is purpose. To find my calling and live it;
  16. to know that I am on the path to finding and following my calling;
  17. to help people heal old wounds;
  18. to live with intention and purpose;
  19. to live my life as I do and want, to grow my soul through the lessons;
  20. to be creative;
  21. to learn how to stop myself from being short with my loved ones when they try to be kind;
  22. to understand life’s purpose;
  23. it would drastically change my life having a clear objective and a clear way of pursuing it;

    Happiness

  24. to be who I am, total connection with my spirit;
  25. to end disconnection from others (which leads to loneliness);
  26. to be in touch with life;
  27. to be intimate and less afraid;

    Peace of Mind

  28. to have peace of mind;
  29. to be free from worry and fear
  30. to honor our bodies, our minds, our spirits – and each other;
  31. to feel serenity in making life decisions that are aligned with all those values;
  32. to be peaceful so I may be free of these knee jerk responses so that I may act from compassion and wisdom;
  33. to have peace of mind and clarity;
  34. to stop my perfectionism and actually do better at work and in everything else;
  35. to have silence in my head;
  36. to turn off that inner voice always talking;
  37. to get rid of unwanted negative thoughts;
  38. to stop judging my thoughts;
  39. to ride peacefully with whatever is presented on my journey;
  40. to learn how to maintain internal emotional peace (especially from fear), so that I can gain self-confidence.
  41. to learn step by step processes on how let go, detach, not judge, feel inner peace;
  42. how to control anguish, frustration, and not to let others harm you;
  43. not to compare my needs with others and be attached to outcomes to look good;
  44. how to feel free. I know it is all in my head, but I often feel hindered by other people and their demands. Why can I not be who I am and not feel guilty about it?

    Productivity

  45. to master time-management;
  46. to develop self discipline;
  47. to create good habits;
  48. to experience a paradigm shift that helps me view challenges differently, especially relating to self discipline and motivation;
  49. to learn how to be in the zone;
  50. to be more productive and focused;

    Self-acceptance and confidence

  51. to build enough self-confidence to spread my message to wider audiences;
  52. to quiet the negative self-talk;
  53. to move away from negative self-limiting thoughts;
  54. to quell my self doubts and just get on with it so that my life doesn’t feel like it’s one step forward and two steps back;
  55. to recognize all the good in my life, and being content with it.
  56. to worry less about my performance at work (which is very high, but due to family conditioning, I always feel ‘on trial’);
  57. to feel more courage, and less embarrassment;
  58. to be confident about consistently making good decisions;

    Meaningful Work

  59. to fInd a way to earn a living doing something that contributes to others, yet doesn’t rob my soul;
  60. to find a passion and stick with it;
  61. to find a way to pursue my calling while also supporting my family financially.
  62. to be able to find fulfillment in my career.
  63. to find how to reconcile productivity and relaxation. Oftentimes I get so engaged in my work that I end up burning out or running into hours for relaxation.
  64. to truly zero in on the essence of what my talent or gift is;
  65. to realize that what I have to offer is exactly what the world needs at this point in time;
  66. to achieve my fullest potential in terms of skills that I have;
  67. to translate my potential into a comfortable lifestyle for me and my family;
  68. to feel like I’m not just ‘going through the motions’ at work and remove the feeling that my ‘real’ life is lived outside of work
  69. to know what I want and have the resolve not to re-evaluate it too soon;

    Happiness

  70. to feel more free, and that my many, many obligations would not be an obstacle to feel free.
    to know that what I’m doing is worthwhile – raising kids, the work I do, the way I live my life and interact with people.
  71. to make a positive difference for people close to me. and therefore be happy.
  72. to maintain a good work/life balance;

In the light of these responses, it seems that what most people yearn for is to feel peaceful, to be relieved of self-doubts, and to engage in meaningful work.

Which of these responses do you resonate with?

So many of these resonated, Mary, it looked like someone had been peeking in my journals!

I want to spend my life loving, supporting people and touching hearts with the song I was born to sing.

PS It’s my bloggling’s birthday today, and as you were its first ‘godmother’, I just wanted to say a quick thank you! I’ll never forget your help.

Hi Janice, you say:
“I want to spend my life loving, supporting people and touching hearts with the song I was born to sing.”

It’s great that you have a sense of what kind of song you are born to sing! So many people can’t find what it is that might make their life meaningful.

Congratulations on the birthday of your blog – well done!

A very thought provoking post, as usual. Some of the ‘wants’ certainly resonated.

I drunk a mug of tea while I thought about them. I decided that what I wanted at any single point in my life had varied with my age and circumstances – hardly an earthshaking revelation. So then I considered what I would want at the *end* of my life, some stunning grand phrase that would encapsulate all the differing wants of my life. Certainly a feeling of peace, living a meaningful life in accordance with my values, and being relieved of unnecessary expectations all came into it. But in the end, it boiled down to a single word – contentment.

OK, so perhaps that needs some explanation. I guess different folks might have other ways of defining it, but for me ‘contentment’ captures the idea of feeling that there are no sharp regrets, no spirit destroying fears, no shameful failure of values, complete forgiveness, sound relationships, realised ambitions, sufficient wisdom, enough compassion, and plenty of sweet moments of joy and happiness. I’m not sure I can achieve all that, but trying to achieve it will be worthwhile.

The absolute truth of these words speaks volumes to my soul Carefully considered and written down, it shows a simple yet deeply moving sentiment. One with which I agree with whole-heartedly. It moves me in a quiet sort of way………

Let me pick up the spirituality collection.

- to stop searching answers to unanswerable questions and just live; — I love this one. It seems very integrative and in peace and present in this moment.

- to feel connected and not separated and lost would change my life; – in this one I like that the writer know what she or he wants instead of only knowing what she/he does not want.

I feel in connection with who I am and very present right now. I am just a very unique just as you are no matter what you do and achieve. :)

Hi Mary,

It was wonderful reading the responses and realizing how universal our wants and desires are!

I want to experience as much joy as possible in all areas of my life. Naturally that includes giving and receiving in uplifting relationships.

And to learn to ride the wave of the ebb and flow of life gracefully much of the time.

Lovely newsletter. Thank you!

Hi Lauren, you say: “I want to experience as much joy as possible in all areas of my life. Naturally that includes giving and receiving in uplifting relationships.”
That’s lovely. Joy is such a wonderful word, compared to ‘happiness’. It’s much deeper… maybe I should write about the difference, eh?

Yes, Pilar – to have a job that allows us to give the best of us, that’s rare. My theory is that the only way to achieve that is to create our own opportunities.

One job is working for an insurance company, very wel lpaying, pleasant, but no face to face patient contact. The other is a at previous employer, a hospice, I loved the work, but it could be demanding physically, and it does not pay as well. I don’t know what criteria to use to decide! I am 59, and my family is in need of income. My heart is working with patients. I feel pulled. I am tired.

“to feel serenity in making life decisions that are aligned with all those values;”

This one resonated with me. We all share the desire to live a life that adheres to our values, but it’s often a struggle to make choices that reflect our beliefs and what we truly want for our lives. An ebook offering guidance on that topic would be of great value to me.

Ah – ‘Feel the love that I am’. My take is that this doesn’t just happen because we think it’s a good idea. There are training paths that can lead us there, for example the ancient Buddhist training tradition of Metta, or Loving-Kindness meditation. It works!

That’s interesting, Hari. Now this might sound strange but I think that ‘fear of nothing’ and ‘courage’ aren’t bedfellows. Only those who have fear need courage :-)

My sense is that we are all afraid at some level. The more we acknowledge and accept that we are fearful, the more our courage grows.
What do you think?

Reply

46 Hari March 31, 2010 at 10:49 pm

‘The more we acknowledge and accept that we are fearful, the more our courage grows’. Thats very insightful of you Mary. Cant agree more with you on this. And when i said fear of nothing, i meant fear of losing earthly possessions and fear of failure. When i said courage to speak up, i meant getting rid of my inhibitions. Sorry for not being clearer in the first instance. Can you also shed some light on ‘Clarity and control over thoughts’ ?

Reply

47 Mary Jaksch April 1, 2010 at 3:36 pm

Well, I’m in two minds about ‘controlling thoughts’. I don’t like the idea of having a ‘mind police’ that hunts down our inappropriate thoughts and throws them into a dungeon!

I think it’s important to let go of unskillful thoughts – in a gentle way.

Clarity is great! It means that we keep an overview and are not taken in by our negative thoughts.

Hi Mary,

Hmmm, what do I want from life. For what seems like a long time now I’ve sat here wondering that exact question. The more I think of it the more I question it. Thus my problem – finding the answer. Is my life fate or is it destiny – does it have purpose?

I have two beautiful, smart daughters and have traveled the world with the Canadian military to some of the worst spots on the planet. I also volunteer my Wednesday evenings to the homeless. I’m not sure if it’s because it makes me feel better doing something for someone or because it makes them feel better having someone do something for them (sort of the same but fundamentally different). So in a lot of ways I feel that I’ve contributed positively and have made a difference.

Yet, everyday I wake with the same question – what do I want from life?

Perhaps it’s to find unconditional love, a smile and warm embrace. Maybe its adventure or just immersing myself into the serenity of a peaceful setting such as a walk down a tree lined country road or sitting on a mountain.

Maybe I already have what I want from life and just don’t know it???

John

I would like contentment, I would like enlightenment, and I would most assuredly like love, not just from someone else, but from myself. I feel I have reached three of those things and found my own personal path through this life. I really like the answers I have seen on here, and aren’t all of our roads a personal path we tread where no two are the same. Keep thinking, believing and striving.

The only thing I could think of through this entire post is that I don’t want to feel alone. I want to love and feel loved. To me, that’s all I’ve ever wanted out of life. I’m floundering now, and I’ll admit it. I don’t even know where to start.

Embrace feeling alone as it gives us empathy for other people that are lonely. We need to feel alone as it is the catalyst for finding someone to love and who will love us. Our need for love changes throughout our lives. When we are young we long for romantic love and as we age we just keep loving whoever is in the room, the grocery store, the library. The most important person to love is the person standing in front of us or the person in the same room with us. Smile when we feel like crying, say something kind when we feel like complaining and soon the positive responses from others will train us to say something kind and thoughtful every time we encounter someone. In this way we learn we are not alone and good people abound. Wisdom comes with all ages and love comes from the most unexpected places. Get up and get ready every morning for an adventure. Be out doing something where there are other people. Someone will notice you shining. If we do what we have always done we will get what you have always got, but if we change our patterns of behavior and the physical places we frequent and step outside of our comfort zone by trying something new life will happen and the opportunities for love will increase. I came from my home to America and met my husband that weekend. I don’t like to fly but I flew for 10 hours to get here on my own. I was outside of my comfort zone and life gave me the gift of love.

Thanks for the article, It’s very interesting to find out what really people wants in this life.
I dont know what I want and I am confused most of the time due to the amount of pressure I have on my shoulder not fo fail. I look peaceful, kind and very confident person on the outside but deep down inside I am a prisoner whose locked and don’t know how to get out!

Well, what I want is to know me and just for once in my life to let people know me, not the ideal me. Most are not ready for the real me and that scares me.

I want a home, a husband and two (three?) kids. I want to love unconditionally and not have it thrown back into my face.

I want to die a very painful and slow death, so then I will know it hit me before It really even happened.

Dear Dylan,
I felt drawn to your post. I am a Hospice nurse, and have sat with many people as they died. Almost every one had a peaceful death, and were not afraid. Most told me that they saw loved ones in the room waiting for them before they died, and two told me, in so many words, that it was “very easy”. They knew they were about to die, knew it was about to happen, but were at peace. That is what I wanted you to know is possible, even likely, and I hope it lessens your fear of not knowing before it happens. It has lessened mine.

I find what I want is a bad question to ask. I want to conquer the world to get all the money, sex, power, and fame possible. In other words, I want too much.

What do I need? That is easy. I need air, water, food, love, shelter, energy, and clothing, and not very much at that. Wants are too many and they expand. Needs are simple and do not expand. Needs can be fulfilled. Wants just expand with age. The more money my wife has the less financially secure she feels and agonizes about “losing” money. Money really is nothing, a claim on the future that may or many not come true. Needs are what I try to focus on.

I don’t mean to be negative, only pragmatic. This is the most selfish list I have ever seen. Are people really that lost? Maybe turning off the television, cancel your cable and stop getting brainwashed by media is your first step to a more satisfied life. Forget your pastor, he/she is likely lost as well. If you desire more spirituality, just read the bible as it is, without commentary and without other biases. Read it as it is and think it through yourself.

Well, I’m going to add my apology up front because I know this is also going to sound negative – but this list is a joke! There’s nothing definitive or measurable on this list – it’s all pie in the sky wishing. To feel happy, to understand life’s purpose – seriously! Life’s purpose is to get out and DO something useful and stop waiting for a magic formula to feel better about yourself.

It is good that people strive for happiness, peace of mind, meaningful life and other important things. Money seems important too but I am glad that people focus on improving their spiritual aspect. I would also love to master time management so that I could be able to work productively and enjoy my life more.

Mary, I think your post is very encouraging. You’re right that we sometimes aren’t sure just what we want out of life, and here are some good suggestions. I’m about to finish college and so I’m starting to ask myself these questions, too.

All I want is to no why and what I’m really here for? I have so many ways to go because I am talented that I’m confused what way to go and as long as I’m happy it really don’t matter as long as I’m some where. And as long as I have the strength to choose from one talent and put it to use that’s what’s going to make me happy in life and if one don’t work then I’ll try another…..

I would like to live longer to not regret that I haven’t try something that I really wanted, and this is why I hesitate from time to time where to go, what to choose.. What I want from life probably is to have an ability to choose.. Life is too short.

In addition to my previous post..

I like this one: “to achieve my fullest potential in terms of skills that I have”
This is probably what I want, ardently desire and act upon, but it is hard to be enthusiastic about.

And here I come with an answer: Life is too short to achieve it.

This is why I feel sometimes like I waste my time and myself living. ;)

I know life is short but it doesnt matter. cos the situation is the same for all of us , but most of the times when we feel sad , the reason isnt actually a reasonable reason. So we should think about our thinking sometimes we feel sad with no reason , but when we move back and think y? we underastand e.g my friend said sth that i didnt like and actually we r sad but we shouldn be for little things.or sometimes we think we have problems , in some people it hapoens when they r idealist like me. idealists want every thing in best guality abd want to perform their works in a best way.and it causes stress for them to be the best and to do the best , but we human none of us r compelete without any fault.There is no reason that our thinking are true , so evaluate ur thinking and even sometimes change them , I believe we will be the person who we considered in our mind so never thinh negative all of us are created to do sth , all of us have some roles even little but we r responsible . believe in your skills never think others can but i cant.never.Im sure our lives will change if our mind changes. no need to change other cos its impossible so change ur self.bye.

There are so many things that I want in life. Happiness, peace, balance, love and to love others, to know where to go in life, to know myself, to trust in my own talents, to achieve great things, and the list could go on forever.

But when thinking about the law of attraction and how to attract things into your life, they say one must first be grateful for what they have and where they are in life, and first after that, they can move on to something greater.

So this is me being grateful for what I have. The great life that I have. The loving family that I have. The many opportunities that I have. And simply being healthy.

Love and Light

I love your ideas. How did you decide what to post. Did you apply your “common sense filter”, or was there some scientific component to your process?
