Wow what an amazing perspective Annie! That's a concept that gets much deeper to the core of detachment. Involuntary detachment can be the hardest for the ego to deal with because of our self identification. It's something we're extremely attached to of course. I can only imagine the growth you've gone through by peeling back the onion so to speak. Thank you so much for the insight & different perspective! (A HUGE thank you for the kind email back over at my blog from my recent post) You rock!

Hi, Tony. I've not read your blog before. I guess you've got another fan! ;)

My experience with stuff has been more an involuntary loss, followed by choosing then to emotionally detach or to be miserable in feeling the loss as "bad."

I became disabled back in 1997. I went from a good salary to NO income during the two years it took for my Social Security Disability to be approved, losing not only my income, but also my savings and voluntary retirement because I needed food and shelter. Then I lost my independence as I shuffled between family and friends, waiting for that first check. As you can imagine, there was less and less stuff with every move.

What was REALLY hard to detach from, though, was my self-image of "who I was supposed to be," which certainly did NOT include living off the dole, shopping at thrift stores instead of Wally World, getting groceries from food pantries, etc.

Other freedoms are less obvious. When I take a college course, it's purely out of interest not because it will help me get a better job. I am more able to detach from my physical self because it relieves my chronic pain.

I won't say it's not scary or hard work from time to time, but reaping huge rewards helps me get thru it. :)
