Hi Mary
I have also gained more than just a few kilos in the last year, and although most people won't call me fat, i am still feeling uncomfortable and do not fit into any of last years clothes. I would like to shed at least 10kgs. I liked the thought of taking it slowly. So I will try to walk each day, even if just for 5 minutes as a start, and then building it up in increments. I have thought of parking my car at a certain distance from work each day, and then increasing the distance in small increments that would seem manageable. I think it is so true that our brains cannot handle a lot of change at once and easily give up trying if it feels overwhelming. So I am going to be kind to myself and just expect a SMALL change at first. Thanks for your positive and constructive help!

As I see it there are two pleasuarble thngs fighting against each other. Being fit feels great, but so does lazing around all day putting on weight.

I agree with the gradual change concept thing because it works for me. We humans are creatures of habit, we don't like sudden changes. We are more likly to adapt to something new if we gradually change our ways.

@Kareb: Selling my car was the big step; now if I want to go anywhere the default methods are walk or bike! I'm not completely car-free (I can beg the loan of Darling Wifey's wheels when I absolutely have to drive), but it's not the norm for me anymore. That's what I'm calling my exercise habit!

I've dropped down on my exercise lately and the pounds come back so easily. People talk about establishing and exercise habit, I dont know... it is always a conscious choice for me. Even when I've gotten to the point of enjoying regular workouts, I dont know that it is ever something that is a habit. Others experience?

Thankfully I'm already in the exercise habit, but I might give try this to get myself meditating regularly. I seem to have the same problem there that many people have with exercise - I know it's a good idea, I know I'll feel better if I do it, but I just can't seem to get up the motivation!

Kaizen is a really interesting concept. I often use that way of changing habits gradually. It works well for me.

Good luck in getting back into shape!
