I've been walking twenty years and its the best thing I've done for myself living in a stressful city. I live in the hills so walking up them gets my HR going. I'm healthy and lost weight. My best advice while walking: keep your head up and look around. This will force you to be in the Now. Look at trees, homes, clouds, anything that crosses your path. Keep your tempo up and bring it all in. You'd be amazed afterwards. I would not be doing it for over twenty years if it didn't work. Skip like a kid, jump over puddles, pretend your surfing as you go under trees. Have Fun.

Great article.
I need to exercise more. I'm not fat, but overweight if you want to get technical.
Not only that but I do have overwhelming, intrusive thoughts.
I have two major questions to ask you Mrs. Jaksch...
1. Could you please go into further detail with be in the difference of mindlessness and mindfulness? I think I may know more than I think I do but I'm having a hard time achieving it.
2. Suffering from OCD, I am constantly bombarded by intrusive thoughts. Lat night I meditated for what was probably the longest I have so far and the most relaxed. Yet I was still plagued by these thoughts! Do you have any helpful tips or suggestions?
Thanks. :3

Hi Mary, I really appreciate this post about walking meditation. I used to do it more but have gotten away from it a little. I still walk daily but am doing it a little less. Some days the only walking I do is with my dog, which is nice, but not quite the same as walking alone, which I love. Thanks again!

My partner treated me to a long and thorough foot massage recently. It so sensitised my feet, that it felt as if they had been turned into hands! When I walked it seemed as if I had hands beneath my ankles, actively feeling the ground beneath them. Giving my soles some TLC has done wonders for my walking. Thanks for the post Mary.

Throughout my day, I noticed I was constantly flooded with overwhelming thoughts. My friends picked up on it, and said they could tell because I was constantly moving and faster all the time. So, I have started making a point to walk with the pace of my own heartbeat. This brings my mind to focus, helps actually keep my heartbeat down, and reduces anxiety.

Hi Mary,I love walking too, and today I walked with my BF for over an hour on a beautiful trail along Lake Washington in Seattle. I walk in part for my health and in part to relax and get out in nature. I'm nor sure I walk mindfully, so I need to read this post over again to see what I might do a little differently. Thank you so much.
