This is a very interesting article. I'm still only newly involved in meditation, and already get a... More connected, "mystical" feeling to... Well, IDK what. Myself?
It's obvious that meditation is not only effective, but is more than just a mind trick because the brain research shows abnormal activity, or inactivity, in the brain compared to how it behaves normally as we go shopping or see a movie or whatever.
To give my opinionated answer to your questions...
I believe research such as this, along with even more research. Research that is even more extensive, is a good thing indeed.
Regardless of what highly advanced tools, machines, and equipment we have, brain research and study has not existed for very long in terms of history. We may have an amazingly advanced MRI system, but that doesn't mean it's entirely accurate, or gives us ALL of the information of what's going on.
In terms of a Buddhist perspective on enlightenment. I highly doubt that anything we have now could successfully record and understand the brain on an enlightened individual.
If such a machine will ever exist, it will most likely be many many years from now. Maybe decades. Or centuries!

I've really enjoyed the commentary here. What I get from this is that its possible to have profound life-changing peace-giving growth experiences without jumping to supernatural conclusions to explain them.

Mary,
Here's my belief:

Just because mystical experiences can be created by electrical blips doesn't mean that there can't be a transcendental phenomenon that produces it also.

Perhaps the electronic blips merely makes us more receptive to experiencing the mystical.

@Michelle
Thanks for the heads-up on the NYT article. Here is the URL:

I agree, the book is quite extraordinary!

The New York Times Sunday Newspaper on May 25 had a great two page article on Jill Bolte Taylor and her book, "MY STROKE OF INSIGHT". Her book is a must read and this NY Times article - called "A Superhighway to bliss" is worth checking out too.

@Dylan
thank you for your passionate comment. I too was bowled over by he r book. It gives me the hope that whatever may befall me in the future, I can make something of it - not just for myself - but for others.

I read "My Stroke of Insight" in one sitting - I couldn't put it down. I laughed. I cried. It was a fantastic book (I heard it's a NYTimes Bestseller and I can see why!), but I also think it will be the start of a new, transformative Movement! No one wants to have a stroke as Jill Bolte Taylor did, but her experience can teach us all how to live better lives. Her TED.com speech was one of the most incredibly moving, stimulating, wonderful videos I've ever seen. Her Oprah Soul Series interviews were fascinating. They should make a movie of her life so everyone sees it. This is the Real Deal and gives me hope for humanity.

I’ve been recommending “My Stroke of Insight” to everyone I know. It’s the best book I’ve read all year! You can get Jill's book from Amazon for a good discount.
Here's the link:
